Good story!
Back in a few issues of climbing magazine, there was an article giving some beta to climb the Tasmania Totem pole. It said the leader may use a cheater stick to clip the first bolt and pull self over on the rappelling rope to avoid getting wet. But I don’t know how long the stick can reach to the first bolt. If anyone interested, I can search for the article.
